TOOLKIT

faq's

What’s the purpose of the education toolkit?
Tailored to education staff and volunteers from museums and history organizations, the Education Toolkit will help build strong relationships with school district leadership and teachers. The toolkit focuses on how to:
  • Partner with school district leadership
  • Utilize Minnesota’s history and social studies standards in education outreach
  • Organize extended school tours
  • Use Dropbox and school trunks to relay history stories to students

What are the major sections of the toolkit?
Step 1:  Exploration of Barriers and Opportunities
Step 2:  Forming Relationships
Step 3:  Developing a Deliverable Education Product
Step 4:  Developing Online Products Teachers Can Access in their Classrooms

Who created the toolkit?
The Legacy Strategic Agenda Collaborative supported the work of the Education Priority Action Team to develop the toolkit.  Susan Garwood, Executive Director, Rice County Historical Society, chaired this team.

This resource was published by the Rice County Historical Society (Faribault, MN) and the Goodhue County Historical Society (Red Wing, MN) in collaboration with the Minnesota Alliance of Local History Museums and Minnesota Historical Society through the Legacy Strategic Agenda partnership. This collaboration was made possible by the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund through the vote of Minnesotans on November 4, 2008 and was administered by the Minnesota Historical Society.

What inspired the team to produce the toolkit?
The Education Priority Action Team sponsored a research study that examined the opportunities and barriers between schools and historical societies.  The aim was to enhance cooperation between schools and local history to advance the education of students.  More information on the needs assessment is in the toolkit.

How can I use the toolkit with my schools?
Within this toolkit are resources (forms, examples, and even suggested meeting agendas) that will help you build relationships with your local schools and share your institution’s historical resources with local educators. You can use it to reach out to your schools, build online resources, and even design your own educational experience that incorporates Minnesota State Standards. When you build relationships with your schools, it accelerates your ability to educate the students at all grade levels inside and outside of the classroom.
