Peers Helping Peers Since 1991
The Minnesota Alliance of Local History Museums may have started as an advocacy group in 1991, but it has grown
to include other programs to serve the local history community in Minnesota. At the heart of our mission,
we believe that we are stronger together than we are separately and that we all benefit from "peers helping peers."

Advocacy
Local history groups who felt that small organizations were getting short changed in state funding formed The Alliance in 1991. MALHM continues to be the voice of local history and advocate for the local history community in Minnesota.
Annual Conference
What began as an annual workshop has grown into a two-day conference packed with sessions geared to small- and medium-sized history organizations. Participant evaluations tell us the annual conference is the highlight of the year, with opportunities to learn from each other in both formal sessions and informally over lunch or evening mixers.
Join us at the 2020 Conference in Austin, MN April 28-30. "I value most the opportunity to exchange ideas, accomplishments, and mistakes with fellow local history professionals in a safe and nurturing environment." "I am a volunteer with a local museum and chose to attend the conference when I heard about it. I have no experience with historical societies or museums and figured this would be helpful to me in understanding what needs to be done and how I can help my local organization. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to upgrade my understanding of the ways I can contribute to my organization." |
History Awards
Minnesota has been a national leader in public history but did not have a sanctioned awards program to identify this work until 2009, when the Minnesota History Awards were created by the Minnesota Alliance of Local History Museums. Not only do the awards give community recognition to great work, but they also provide a role model for other history organizations. See our History Awards page for more info on the nominating process and to learn from past award winners.
Mutual Assistance
After calling 911 during a fire, flood or other natural disaster, MALHM members can call in their peers in the local history community to help with recovery of historic artifacts. Fellow local historians will assist keeping property safe from theft and minimize damage from the elements. See our Mutual Assistance page for more information.
Networking
Networking means talking to people who share the same passion for history as you do. MALHM helps you connect with peers so you feel comfortable making a phone call to ask for advice or start a conversation on one of our Facebook groups. New networking opportunities include two new groups: the Curators Affinity Group and the House Museum Affinity Group. See our Networking page for more information.

Newletters
We keep the Minnesota local history community informed through our quarterly member newsletter, email updates and social media. Get our mailing list and stay connected!
Online Library
MALHM members live up to our motto of "peers helping peers" by sharing their knowledge with each other in an online library. You can access everything from a housekeeping schedule for a historic house museum to sample board job descriptions to our "Collections Initiative" collections manual for small museums.
The library is a benefit of membership. Join today! "For me, the MALHM Conference was the most valuable two days since becoming a Director! There was so much to learn and the sessions were helpful and inspiring. The presenters were all very knowledgeable with real life experiences and implementing the projects and programs they were presenting. Networking with others in the museum field was extremely valuable. I plan to learn more each year and highly encourage all museum workers, especially those who are new to the field, to attend. An amazing value for the money!" |
